As a part of its Centennial year celebration activities, Catholic Charities CYO
announced today it will begin accepting entries for its Centennial Essay Contest
for 7th grade and 11th grade Archdiocesan students. Contest participants are
encouraged to write about the importance and influence of Good Samaritans in
their lives, and a scholarship prize of $1,500 will be awarded by Archbishop
George Niederauer to the winning 7th grade essay and 11th grade essays. Certificates
of recognition will also be awarded to the top three finalists in each category.
Essays will be judged on originality, grammar and content.
The winning essays will be announced at the Catholic Charities CYO Centennial
Mass at St. Mary’s
Cathedral on Sunday, May 20 at 3:30 P.M., and posted on Catholic Charities CYO’s
website. A celebratory Family Reception will immediately follow the Centennial
Mass in the Patrons Hall of the Cathedral, where an exhibit of art created
by 3rd grade Archdiocesan students especially for the Centennial will also
be displayed.
The essay topic and question reflect Catholic Charities
CYO’s mission of
living the Gospel values of Charity and Justice by caring for our neighbors,
and illustrate that compassion should be for all people.
To participate, students must submit essays by email or
hard copy no later than 5:00 P.M. on Monday, April 16, 2007. Hard
copies may be mailed or hand
delivered
to: Catholic Charities CYO Essay Contest, 180 Howard Street, 1st Floor,
San Francisco, CA 94105; or faxed to 415.972.1201. Email submissions
must be

The Centennial Essay Contest and Centennial Art Exhibit
are a part of Catholic Charities CYO’s Centennial, which will be celebrated throughout 2007, and
features a variety of events that commemorate the building of our community,
recognize with love and gratitude the many lives changed over the past 100 years,
and highlight its mission to serve and advocate for the most vulnerable among
us. |
