San Francisco, CA It was announced today
that Catholic Charities CYO’s 9th annual Loaves & Fishes Awards
Dinner at the Ritz-Carlton raised $1,300,000, which directly benefits
the social service agency’s 30 programs.
Archbishop George H. Niederauer, the new Chairman of the Board for
Catholic Charities CYO, presented the 2006 Loaves & Fishes Awards
for Outstanding Philanthropic Works to Richard C. Blum, for Outstanding
Service to the Community to Alliance of Mission District Catholic
Schools,
and for Outstanding Community Organization to the Carl Gellert & Celia
Berta Gellert Foundation.
Each of this year’s honorees are steadfastly committed to focus
significant efforts on improving education – on the local, regional
and global levels – from San Francisco’s Mission District
children, to Bay Area schools and communities, to the education of the
poor in Nepal, Mongolia, Tibet and Africa.
In selecting his first honorees since assuming his recent appointment
in San Francisco, Catholic Charities CYO’s new Chairman of the Board
Archbishop George Niederauer stated, ”These three honorees are very
distinct, yet they are all absolutely dedicated to providing educational
opportunities for those in need, and show a strong commitment and concern
for others, which is inspirational and serves as motivation for many.”
Catholic Charities CYO Board President Clinton
Reilly remarked, “When
Janet and I hosted the first dinner in 1998, we raised $341,000. Tonight
I’m pleased to announce that our Loaves & Fishes Leadership
Donors and Honoree Contributors have brought the total raised to $1,300,000 – a
new record in leadership giving as well as in tonight's attendance of
over 550. We’re very pleased that this dinner has now raised over
$6.8 million for the programs of Catholic Charities CYO – programs
that serve more than 45,000 people per year.”
Created by Cardinal William Levada, Archbishop Emeritus of San Francisco,
the Loaves & Fishes Award honors extraordinary charitable works in
our communities and raises vital funds for the programs of Catholic Charities
CYO.

Our mission is to serve and advocate for the poor, the sick, the distressed, children, youth, families,
immigrants and seniors, regardless of their faith. All money contributed to Catholic Charities CYO
directly supports our programs in San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo Counties.
Founded in 1907 to care for the orphans of the San Francisco earthquake, Catholic Charities is an
agency of the San Francisco Archdiocese, yet operates as an independent non-profit organization,
and does not in any way contribute to or receive funds from the church.
