ARCHBISHOP of SAN FRANCISCO APPOINTS SEVEN NEW MEMBERS TO CATHOLIC CHARITIES CYO BOARD of DIRECTORS

San Francisco, CA – It was announced today that Archbishop George H. Niederauer has appointed Carlos Alvarez, Gloria Carlos, John A. Knight, James McCabe, Stephen Molinelli, Robert Morris, and Rev. Dr. Kenneth Weare to the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities CYO (CCCYO), one of the largest non-profit providers of social services in the Bay Area.

The Catholic Charities CYO Board of Directors oversees the $39 million organization, which supports 33 critical programs that help the Bay Area’s most vulnerable. CCCYO provides services to families, children, the aging and disabled, and runs CYO Camp and CYO Athletic programs that support opportunities for healthy growth and development for youth.

On the new appointees, Archbishop George Niederauer remarked, “These seven new Members bring an abundance of experience and unique resources to Catholic Charities CYO, and will strengthen the agency’s work in serving and advocating for the Bay Area’s most vulnerable. We are blessed to have them join Board President Cecilia Herbert and the other distinguished members of the Board of Directors in steering Catholic Charities CYO into its second century of service.”

Carlos Alvarez is an attorney and founding member of Steyer Lowenthal Boodrookas Alvarez & Smith, LLP in San Francisco, and was previously with Leland, Parachini, Steinberg, Matzger & Melnick, LLP. He is a graduate of the University of San Francisco and the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to his active membership in the Bar Association of San Francisco, the State Bar of California and La Raza Lawyers Association, Alvarez has served on the St. Brendan Parish Advisory Board and as a youth baseball and basketball coach.

Gloria Carlos is a seasoned Human Resources executive with extensive experience in the high technology and financial services industries and currently serves as the Vice President of Human Resources & Administration at Renesas Technology America in San Jose. She is a graduate of St. Scholastica’s College in the Philippines and the New School for Social Research in New York and has previously held senior Human Resources positions with Imagicast, Inc., Goldman, Sachs & Co., and Hitachi America, Ltd., where she realigned the HR department. In addition to her expertise in employee relations, recruitment and management development, Carlos brings a deep knowledge of organizational design and process improvement to Catholic Charities CYO.

John A. Knight is a Director at UBS Financial Services and is the former Senior Vice President & Division Manager at Union Bank of California, where he managed the Northern California and Central Valley/Pacific Northwest divisions of Corporate Deposit Services. He is a senior manager with over 25 years of sales and management experience in the financial services industry, having held positions with Wells Fargo and Chemical Bank. Knight is a graduate of Queens College in New York and Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, and has also dedicated his time and leadership abilities to Westside Community Mental Health Center, Laguna Honda Hospital Foundation, Regents Council at St. Mary’s College and the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.

James McCabe is an accomplished sales, insurance and financial services industry executive and currently serves as Executive Vice President of ABD Insurance & Financial Services in Redwood City, California. He has previously held senior management positions with Sedgwick Noble Lowndes, Arthur Gallagher and Company and Marsh USA, Inc., where was the Managing Director. McCabe is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has been the First Vice President of the Guardsmen since 1989, where he has helped to raise millions of dollars to send underserved Bay Area children to summer camp.

Stephen Molinelli is the owner and manager of Northern California Practice Sales, a firm specializing in dental practice sales and appraisals. He is a graduate of the University of the Pacific and has extensive experience in banking, real estate, finance and sales. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of The First Tee of San Francisco, Molinelli is the tournament chairman of the annual Kids in the Klinic golf tournament and has been a member of the Guardsmen since 1999.

Robert Morris is a private investor and former Managing Director and General Partner for Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he was the head of Global Investment Research in New York, European Investment Research in London and Telecommunications Research. Before joining Goldman Sachs, he was a General Partner at Montgomery Securities and worked for Wells Fargo Investment Advisors in San Francisco. Morris is the former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of San Francisco University High School and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees for the Schools of the Sacred Heart and Marymount School in New York. He holds an MBA from the University of New Mexico and has charitably contributed his time and expertise to the American Liver Foundation and St. Ignatius Church.

Rev. Dr. Kenneth Weare is an adjunct professor of social ethics at the University of San Francisco and Pastor of St. Rita’s Church in Fairfax. A graduate of Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium and St. John’s College in California, he is a Catholic moral theologian and priest, and was the Director of the School of Pastoral Leadership for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Weare has served on the Board of Directors for various human rights, humanitarian and United Nations organizations, including the Humanitarian Law Project, International Educational Development, the International Association Against Torture, the Committee on Disarmament, and the Archbishop Romero Relief Fund. Additionally, he has served as an Official Observer of the El Salvador (1994) and Nicaraguan (1990) elections, and has traveled on human rights delegations to several countries, including Guatemala, Jamaica, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Cuba, the former U.S.S.R., India, Haiti and Honduras.

These seven new appointees join the Catholic Charities CYO Board of Directors during the agency’s Centennial year, which celebrates 100 years of Catholic Charities CYO’s work as a critical safety net for families, children and those in need.
