Even temperatures in the mid-90s couldn’t keep over 220 golfers away from the 48th Annual CYO Golf Day on May 7 at Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club and Stanford Golf Course. Honorary Chairman and San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan and Tournament Chairman Bill Ring joined business leaders, CYO Camp friends and celebrities, including San Francisco 49er legends Harris Barton, Tom Holmoe, Dan Bunz, R.C. Owens, Kenny Margerum, Dave Olerich, Ron Ferrari and Tim Harris, to raise essential funds for CYO Camp operations and scholarships for underserved youth.
CYO Golf Day raises money for kids in need while celebrating sport and fellowship at the oldest charitable golf tournament in the Bay Area. In groups of five-somes—which has become the tournament’s tradition—the duffers played a scramble format and competed in Closest to the Hole, Longest Drive and Most Accurate Drive competitions during their rounds.
The hot temperatures resulted in a power outage affecting the entire neighborhood, but golfers, guests and volunteers continued enjoying their dinner, raffle—which featured a grand prize trip for two to the Masters Tournament or $10,000—and live auction. Auctioneer Frank Bizzarro and his team called out the winning bidders as candlelight kept the tables aglow.
The most poignant moment of the evening occurred when current CYO camper Stephanie shared her amazing yet difficult life story. She explained how CYO campers and counselors have become a second family to her and have become an emotional support for her during tragic times.
The members of the CYO Golf Day Committee and Committee Chair Bill Ring, renew their commitment to CYO Camp through this tournament because of their belief that every child is entitled to the simple pleasures of childhood.
