Enjoying temperatures in the low 80s, Catholic Charities CYO welcomed over 250 new and familiar faces on Monday, May 5 to the 49th Annual CYO Golf Day at Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club and Stanford University Golf Course in Palo Alto. San Francisco 49ers Head Coach and Honorary Tournament Chairman Mike Nolan and Tournament Chairman Bill Ring joined two full fields made up of CYO Camp friends and celebrities, including San Francisco 49er greats Dwight Clark, Harris Barton, Dan Bunz, R.C. Owens, Jamie Williams, Guy McIntyre, Ken Margerum, Eason Ramson and Ron Ferrari to raise vital funds for CYO Camp operations and scholarships for underserved youth.

Playing in groups of five-somes, which has become the tournament’s tradition, the duffers played a scramble format and competed in Closest to the Hole, Longest Drive and Most Accurate Drive competitions during their rounds. For the 19th hole, the golfers from both courses came together at the Sharon Heights ballroom to enjoy a Cinco de Mayo Mexican buffet dinner and the live auction. Auctioneer and CCCYO Board Member Jeff Fenton called out the winning bidders and raised over $32,000 alone the auction.

The most poignant moment of the evening came when Lissette Lopez, a current CYO Camp Counselor, shared her inspirational life story. She explained how CYO Camp and CYO counselors became an emotional support for her during difficult times in her youth. Her CYO Camp experience had such an impact on her life that she chose to become a camp counselor in order to provide the same type of guidance to other youth who are experiencing the same challenges she faced. Through tears, she expressed her thanks to those who were able to supply the scholarship funds that made it possible for her and other children to attend camp.

Congratulations to the 2008 CYO Golf Day Winners!
