Celebrating its fiftieth year of raising money to send kids to camp, Catholic Charities CYO welcomed over 220 friends and supporters on Monday, May 4, 2009 to the 50th Annual CYO Golf Day. Honorary Chairman Mike Singletary and Tournament Chairs Bill Ring and Jim McCabe joined golfers and celebrities, including San Francisco 49er greats Dan Bunz, Dana McLemore, Jamie Williams, Guy McIntyre and Ken Margerum to raise essential funds for CYO Camp.
During the warm afternoon, the duffers played a scramble format in groups of five and competed in Closest to the Hole, Longest Drive and Most Accurate Drive competitions on two beautiful golf courses, Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club and Stanford University Golf Course.
In honor of the 50th year, golfers received a lucky 50 cent piece as they registered which some even used as a ball marker throughout the day.
For the 19th hole, the golfers from both courses came together at Sharon Heights to enjoy lively bidding on sports memorabilia and trips during the silent auction before sitting down for dinner and the live auction. Auctioneer George Noceti kept the focus of the talkative crowd and raised $20,000 in the auction.
Though a little rowdy at times, the crowd remained focused on the reason everyone was there: raising money for kids to get to camp. The most poignant moment of the evening occurred when two CYO Campers shared their inspirational life stories. The first young man shared how CYO Camp and CYO counselors became an emotional support for him during difficult times in his youth. The experience had such an impact on his life that he has earned his lifeguard and CPR certification in order to become a Camp Counselor and give guidance to other youth who may be experiencing challenges in their lives. The second speaker expressed her thanks to those who were able to supply the scholarship funds that made it possible for her and other children to attend camp. Because of their touching remarks, over $30,000 was raised for the CYO Camp scholarship fund!
The evening was concluded with a passionate talk from Mike Singletary, Head Coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Captivating the audience, Coach Singletary spoke of our responsibility to helping the youth of our communities and no doubt inspired many to continue their good work and support of Catholic Charities CYO and other worthy organizations.
Thanks to our top sponsors: UnitedHealthcare, O’Brien Homes, Arata Equipment Company and Top Oil Products, the event revenue exceeded $210,000!
Thank you for your support!
