Therapeutic Equestrian Program

The Therapeutic Equestrian Program is a powerful tool that we utilize in helping the boys at St. Vincent’s literally get back in the saddle of their lives. As we all know, in order to live healthy and successful lives, children need a foundation of love and support and the ability to form lasting bonds of trust and love. Many of the children who come to us have been so severely traumatized they find it almost impossible to form emotional bonds with anyone. Animals, however, have an extraordinary way of reaching children, and provide an outlet for love and devotion for these struggling boys.

The Therapeutic Equestrian Program connects our boys to the pastoral beauty and history of the property, fosters respect for nature and animals, and perhaps most importantly, connects these young men to their innate ability to master new skills – providing a sense of accomplishment and pride. It is a truly unique experience for them, as you might imagine. Our equestrian staff, who are very experienced with spirited horses as well as traumatized children, also encourage the boys to witness visits from veterinarians so they fully understand the importance of taking proper care of the animals. This past year, the program expanded to include more than 20 St. Vincent’s boys in the care and maintenance of the horses.
